Pre-approval checks

It is essential that the senior leadership teams and the school Governors are fully informed and have a clear understanding of the implications of becoming an Academy, as well as understanding what will happen throughout the process.

Your governing body, and foundation if relevant, must pass a resolution in favour of Academy Conversion and then submit an ‘Intention to Convert’ form, including written confirmation of the resolution and your rating from Ofsted. You will then need to discuss with your DfE contact your ‘in principle’ agreement to support another school and to help raise its standards, as well as notifying your local authority of your intention to become an Academy and gaining approval from the Secretary of State. During this process we can offer a range of support, including:

  • Working with you to help you complete your Intention to Convert form
  • Offering information sessions which show best practice examples of partnering
  • Making introductory partnering links for you
  • Providing training and ‘awareness raising’ sessions for your governors and staff which outline the benefits and the challenges of Academy conversion
  • Delivering staff workshops which will help them to understand what it will be like to work without the Local Authority
  • Developing and delivering a stakeholder engagement strategy
  • Organising events to explain Academy Conversion with students and parents, to ensure that they understand the changes proposed
  • Supporting governors in understanding their new roles and responsibilities, by providing training which will help them to:
    • ensure the quality of educational provision
    • challenge and monitor the performance of the Academy
    • manage the Academy Trust’s finances and property
    • employ staff
